Uncoditional Love

Week of August 18

School started this week in many communities. I remember in grade school the teacher went around the room explaining what each person's name meant. When she reached me she said Malcolm means
"bald headed monkey." I you just laughed that is exactly what my classmates did. I was humiliated.

I went home furious with my mother. I demanded why she named me explaining what my teacher said. "Your teacher is incorrect," she responded. "Malcolm means bald eagle." Immediately this third grader's ego was restored. To her credit,  the teacher announced the correction the next day.

I didn't appreciate my mother's unconditional love for me until she was gone. I bet the Apostles felt the same way about Jesus.

"God loves us so unconditionally that, "He gave his only son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have ever lasting life." (John 3:16)

Small Stuff

Week of July 21, 2014

You have heard the saying, "Don't sweat the small stuff and it is all small stuff."
It true. I have a habit of misplacing or losing pens, umbrellas, and sun glasses.
I used to upset when I would lose these things. Not anymore. Look at the people
who have lost a home to a tornado, flood or fire. They are glad they and their loved
ones are alive. Material things of this life are not really that important.

"Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth." (Col 3:2)

"In God we trust "

Weekend of July 4

We still pledge to our flag, "one nation under God." But we are not one nation under God.
There are those who take offense at the word God. That offends me.

My prayer is that "In God we trust" will be more than a phrase.

May God continue to bless America.

"If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal
their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)

May 2, 2014

Dangerous Duty

April 24, 2014

On a trip to China it was not uncommon for a person to come up to our group and stand inches away
from whom ever was speaking and just stare and smile. Always a smile. We felt awkward.

I suppose a Chinese man would feel equally uncomfortable if I gave him a high five or a hug, smiling of course.

These are minor cultural differences. I wondered how awkward, even dangerous it must be for missionaries to bring the Gospel to different cultures.

The Great Commission is not easy to fulfill. It requires courage, obedience and faith.

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28:19)

Why Good Friday

Good Friday, April 18 2014

I'm not sure exactly when I began to understand why Good Friday was called that. Now that
I realize what Jesus went through that day and why, good seems to be an understatement. Why not Sacrifice Friday or Super Friday, or Freedom Friday. How about God Friday.

Thank God for Good Friday. I'm reminded we have to endure Good Friday to get to Easter.

Even during those excruciating hours on the cross, Jesus understood and had the love to pray:

"Father, Forgive them for they know not what they do." Luke 23:34

Palm Sunday Reminder

April 13, 2014
Jesus didn't fit the popular image people had of the coming Messiah. He didn't arrive riding a stately horse leading an army to liberate the city. Instead he is an army of one riding a donkey to free mankind.  This event, which today has become known as Palm Sunday, was predicted 500 years before it happened by the prophet Zechariah;

"Behold your King is coming to you; He is righteous and victorious, lowly riding a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey," (Zechariah 9:9)

March Madness and Prayer

March 24, 2014

Its for the national championship baby. It was UConn vs  Duke. Joy, who doesn't really care about basketball kneels in front of the TV and says, "Lord we pray for a UConn victory, we claim it."

It was a loving jester on her part because she knows her husband follows UConn. But I think 'What will she think when Connecticut loses to highly touted Duke.

Oh you of little faith. UConn wins a cliff hanger 74-71.(After all Duke's nickname is Blue Devils)

Soap Box Derby Lesson

February 18,2014

Four boys hold a wooden car at the top of the ramp. At the signal they let go and the car roll toward the finish line all except one, my son's car. The wheels had bound up. I was mortified. My son was over it in a moment. His buddies were still his friend. I learned an important lesson that week. My son doesn't need a dad who is perfect at every thing, just one that loves him.

Directions from God

February 4, 2014

A pastor friend gave us a couple's name to look up when we moved from Connecticut to Florida. We misplaced the name. Weeks later I was meeting with a lawyer and when I asked him what he did outside of his practice he told me, "my wife and I are helping some people start a church."

He gave me a calling card with a map on the back. The next Sunday Joy and I followed the map to a school this church was renting. We made an instant connection with Bob and Ann Gamble.

Six months later we returned to Connecticut. Our Pastor friend asked if we looked up that couple she
recommended. Of course we hadn't. She wrote their names again on a slip of paper. We read Bob and Anne Gamble. We knew then we were in the church God wanted us to be.

Are We God's Image?

January 17,2017
Genesis says God created man in His image. Do we see God in our image rather than seeing ourselves in His image? We limit God when we worry, doubt or fear. We hold God in our image when we feel lost or defeated, are angry or prideful.  The Prophet Isaiah knew in whose image
he was created.

They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31)

Whose your neighbor?

January 14,2014

It was my first day as an intern on a small daily newspaper. I heard the publisher yell "Whose old Plymouth is parked out front." It was mine. I moved it. Later the city editor took me to the back
of the building, We looked down at an empty parking lot behind a Temple. "You park there," he said, "and if anyone says anything tell them Abe sent you. Abe was my neighbor that day.

When a lawyer asked Jesus, "Who is my neighbor?", Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan.
Then Jesus asked who was the neighbor. The lawyer answered, "The one who showed mercy."

Jesus ended the conversation by saying, "Go and do likewise." (Luke 10:36-37)

Leaving Home

January2, 2014

A walk about the neighborhood reveals a little boy pulling a wagon with a parent standing in the doorway. "Leaving home are we?" I ask. The parent nods. On my return I note the wagon by the
front door. It occurs to me that what the boy really wants to know is that his parents still love him.

Haven't most of us rebelled and walked away from our heavenly Father at some point. Like the boy
we don't get very far on our own. Don't we want to know that God still loves us. He tells us daily
if only we would listen.

"God's faithful love endures forever." (Psalm 136:1)
