Honoring a friend

July 26,2013

When we graduated from Officer Candidates School (OCS) we were told tradition was to honor some enlisted person with the first salute and give him a dollar. I knew that person should be specialist Smith who befriended me during the rigorous training.

As he approached our barracks I came outside. He greeted me with a wave. "Is that how you address
an officer," I said sternly. His face cringed, he stiffened and slowly saluted, I returned the salute and presented him with the dollar and deep appreciation for all he had done for me.

"There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." (Proverbs 18:24)
